Tomokazu Matsuyama’s work -- mostly acrylics on canvas or paper -- has a sense of intrigue, mystery and secrecy that draws the viewer in and demands a further look. There is also a feel of lightness, floating and movement that seems to suggest fleeting glimpses of something impermanent. At the same time, his art carries a strong implication of tradition and of enduring order.
His colors are subdued but lively, and much of the work suggest a paper-cut collage. Humans, mostly men, andanimals, especially horses, populate his art, and even in the abstracts, there is a hint of an eye, a wing, a presence just beyond the immediate first glance. The implication of story and the touch of subtle whimsy make his work accessible and inviting, yet the viewer is not hit with rigid answers. One is left with an oddly comfortable sensation of incomprehension.

'ukigumo - floating clouds' is an art installation by japanese architects fumiaki nagashima
and mami maruoka nagashima of mono for the 5th festival of lively architecture in
montpellier, france. the event called for 11 teams from all around the globe to transform
the old town in to a gallery by creating art pieces for 11 courtyard.

mono's project is developed around the theme of 'japanese independent space sense',
which consciously contrasts the western european exhibition site with ukigumo's japanese
sense of space. the clusters of spindly fiber-glass pipes stand out against the stone columns
of the courtyard, while the 'floating cloud' element of the draped mesh net, balloons
and non woven fabric allows the two different worlds to exist on one stage. the floating clouds
also serve as a device of connection, a visual motif that has been traditionally used in japanese
medieval paintings to tie two different scenes together.

“His work explores ideas of misperceptions and misrepresentations of nature. Natural rock formations known as geodes can be artificially colored using man-made methods. This results in the perversion of the original colors that are found in natural formations. The dyed geodes display a falsification of nature. Tchotchke markets exploit indigenous societies, stealing, altering, and in return, profiting from their culture through souvenirs sales. These mementos have no cultural value, other than being a product of consumer driven economy. The misrepresentations add to the destruction of cultural traditions. I have chosen to work on paper because I view its physical properties [as] temporal, and [its] fragility as appropriately related to the relationship between nature and indigenous cultures.” -Steven Riddle

Art Dubai is not just about showcasing and admiring art. The Global Art Forum is the Middle East's leading platform for cultural debate and discussion, key issues include how to expose the arts scene of the region and how to bring it together with the other art establishments around the world. Under the banner ‘Crucial Moments’, the 2010 Forum explores evolving aspects of contemporary culture including education, mapping modernism, art writing, and patronage.

Encouraging and promoting emerging contemporary artists is what the Abraaj Capital Art Prize is all about. Founded by Abraaj Capital, it's only art prize specifically for the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA). Boasting the world's most generous art prize, the winners get to exhibit their artwork at Art Dubai and the lucky public would be the first to see it.

Students also get to experience Art Dubai in their own special way. Students interested in working within the art world can apply for an internship with Art Dubai and get to work on all aspects of planning and strategy with leading international galleries and artists alike. Naturally, the experience would be hectic but surely invaluable!

So what is in it for the public? Families and art fanatics can pay an entry fee of 50AED and get to marvel at the artworks and take part in the several events, workshops and programmes featured during the different days.

There is literally something for everyone and Art Dubai 2010 is surely going to be a high-paced, exciting event buzzing with creativity from all corners of the world.

A series of balloon letters were developed this year as part of a concept project . The letters were produced using a newly developed technique of blowing the steel under high pressure to create a specific defined form. Produced in stainless steel and highly polished to a mirror finish, the letters were then coloured with a specially tinted coating.

There is nothing like losing yourself in a museum and being completely submerged in history. The Tareq Rajab Museum- one of Kuwait’s distinct personal small-scale museums is a great place to lose yourself at in Kuwait.

The original Tareq Rajab Museum was opened in the 1980's by Taraq Sayed Rajab and his wife Jehan Wellborne. Tareq Sayed Rajab and his wife are avid collectors of historical artifacts which branch out into textiles, ceramics, costumes and calligraphy pieces, to count a few.

Originally a private art collection, the Tareq Rajab Museum houses a collection of over thirty thousand items collected by this dynamic couple over the last fifty years, 10 thousand of which are now on permanent display. The museum contains calligraphy, pottery, metalwork, glass, wood, carvings costumes, textiles, embroideries and jewelry of the Islamic world.

Since then, the museum has expanded by adding two new buildings to the museum in Jabriya, the area where the first museum was opened. The two new additions are Dar Al-Cid and Dar Jehan also known as the Tareq Rajab Museum of Islamic Calligraphy.
